This has been a transitional year for me, and I am relying on Thanksgiving eCards to stay connected with my family this holiday season. It’s funny, when your kids are little it seems that they will never grow up. Next thing you know, in the blink of an eye, you’ve lived through three weddings, four college degrees and two grandbabies. These days, instead of being clustered in two bedrooms at the end of the hall, my son and two daughters are spread across the country. My baby girl, Sarah, was just married this past summer, and this will be the first Turkey Day my husband and I have spent childless in more than thirty years.

While there are things I don’t miss about having the kids home, (those awful, sulky, curfew-breaking teenage years) I do miss the sounds of drinking glasses clinking over stuffed peppers, laughter at corny pilgrim jokes and sincere expressions of gratitude shared around our dining room table. Thanksgiving E cards allow me to recapture some of this holiday experience across the miles. They provide one more way for me to hold close those kids who have moved out and afar.

Thanksgiving eCards are just one variety of electronic greetings available on the internet today. These digital notes feature a wide array of messages, flash animation graphics, sound effects and musical sequences. They are delightfully engaging, funny and heartfelt. While there are many electronic greetings available for all sorts of events, this November I am looking forward to sending both silly and sweet Thanksgiving E cards to my friends and family.

For example, my boy, Jacob, just graduated from dental school this past August. He and his wife live six states away in Kansas City, where he has been hired at a local practice. As a gangly teenager, Jacob always guffawed over each holiday dinner when his dad asked who would like a part of the turkey “breast.” Of course, he’s come a long way as an adult, but I’ll always remember the little boy that poultry could make blush. So when perusing Thanksgiving eCards to send this year, I was delighted to find one featuring a “turkey burlesque” that capitalizes on the same joke Jacob laughed at for years. It is just perfect, and when he opens it from his email account in a few days, I know it will not only make him smile, but it will bring back old memories of home.

For Anne, my oldest daughter, Thanksgiving E cards more sweet and sentimental in nature are just right. For her seven-year old son, my grandson, a note featuring a farting pilgrim will have him rolling on the floor. And for Sarah, celebrating her first holiday with new in-laws, a light-hearted turkey joke will help calm her nerves.

Regardless of the message they carry, what Thanksgiving eCards really communicate is that I care deeply for each of my children. They have given me great joy, and while I will miss them immensely this November 25th, I couldn’t be happier to watch them each make their own way in this world. What better holiday to remind them just how grateful I am for their part in my life than Thanksgiving? E cards provide a perfect way to do exactly that.

Yes, my dining room will be a bit quieter this year, and I’ll look forward to next year when it is full of my grown kids and their families. In the meantime, I will reach out with my Thanksgiving eCards, reminding them of all the good times we have shared together, and toasting the good times that are to come. It might take me a while yet to get used to being a bonified empty-nester, but that doesn’t make me any less of a loving mother or grandmother. And now Thanksgiving E cards can carry my love across the web this holiday season.
