E-book readers have come a long way in their development in the 1990s when they were just bulky things to more recent advancements with some having touch screen capabilities. Before purchasing an e-reader, there are a variety of factors that need to be considered to ensure you have only the best. Below are some of the factors to be considered before purchasing an e-book reader.
Among all the considerations, price is the most important of all as every user operates within a different budget rage. You financial capability pretty much dictates what e-book reader you can afford and which one is out of your price range. It is always advice-able to purchase a reader that easily fits into your budget instead of overspending.
The second factor to consider is the screen type. This mainly depends on the quality of e-ink in the reader. A user should decide on whether they are comfortable with reading they articles on an LCD or liquid crystal display screen or rather on a more paper like screen using e-ink with each having its advantages and disadvantages. E-ink reduces eye-strain and ensures a longer battery life while the LCD screen supports a range of color display and is more suitable for touch screen capabilities.
You should also consider the size and weight of the e-reader. Size has a great bearing on the issue of how portable you want your device to be. Fortunately when it comes to the issue of size, they is an array of choices with some readers being able to fit in the pocket. But for users who relish on larger displays, readers with big screens up to 10 inches in size are preferable. The different weights of different e-book readers also factor in the tastes of different users.
Another important factor to consider is the interface on the e-reader. Basically the controls on most e-book readers are based on touch screens or buttons and in some cases a combination of both. Devices that operate with buttons use less power and are more accurate. They can however be cumbersome to use. Touch screen based readers are however more intuitive and easier to use. On the downside, they can be smudge-prone and laggy together with the fact that they consume more battery power.
The battery life of an e-book reader should also be carefully considered before purchasing one. This is important depending on whether you use your reader primarily at home or while on the move. The battery life of an e-reader is measured in page turns. For users who only use their reader at home, a long battery life is not an important consideration as they can easily charge their readers in case they run out of juice. But for the users who are always on the move, a reader with a longer battery life is more important.
Other important considerations include the reader’s features and storage capacity. Some e-readers are designed only for reading while others have added features that includes music playback. The storage capacity on the other hand dictates how much media can fit in your device at any one time. For this reason some readers come with memory card slots for supplementing the internal memory.
